Valuation of Guyana Fisheries

Background

Fisheries is an economically and socially important sector in Guyana that is under-studied and under-researched. Data on the sector is sparse and the overall positive effect that the sector has on the Guyanese economy and individual livelihoods is generally under-appreciated. In this study we combine secondary data from a variety of different sources with primary data collected via a survey of artisanal marine fishermen across Guyana to estimate and discuss the variety of impacts the sector has on the economy and society of Guyana. The aim of this project was to provide a baseline valuation of the country’s sector which is often undervalued.
